Greetings, I am Tia King — a creative soul from Laurel, Maryland, now living and growing in Brooklyn, New York.
My creative journey began long before I ever called it that. I picked up my first pair of clippers at 14 years old, drawn to the art of creating styles of expression through hair. What started as curiosity quickly became a passion. Over time, cutting hair became more than a craft; it became a form of therapy. As my skill set grew, so did my confidence and it all brought me to a very quaint, black-queer-owned barbershop in Brooklyn, NY.
Photography has also always been a calling of mine. I’ve always been fascinated by how faces and places transform with different lighting and horizons. As a self-taught photographer, I began creating with shooting using my iPhone as opposed to a fancy camera. By using what I had to express what I felt in the moment, allowed me to discover that capturing images is something I want to do regularly . It showed me that art doesn’t require the perfect set up or an exact plan, just presence and intention.
Now, as a licensed barber, photographer, and aspiring model, I marry these worlds — shaping, capturing, and reflecting beauty in all its forms. Every image and every cut is guided by the same principle: connection. Seeing people, energy, and emotion for what they truly are.
When I’m not creating visually, I find peace in making music, letting sound carry what words can’t. Art, for me, is healing — it’s how I tell my story and hopefully help others see theirs.
Through every cut, photo, and creative moment, I’m learning that art isn’t just something I do — it’s who we all are. It’s a way of connecting with the world, honoring authenticity, and reminding others that there’s beauty in simply being seen.
